Who is on DW?

With livejournal once again providing me with reasons to move away from it more permanently I just wanted to check if there is anyone already on Dreamwidth that I haven't added yet.

I've made the swap to Dreamwidth, thanks to the benevolence of [info]etfb/[info - personal] etfb. Not that it's likely to change the frequency with which I post, however I do like the idea of having time to adjust to a non-lj environment while things still work and before the list of reasons for *not* sticking with livejournal becomes long enough to actually justify it being referred to as a list.

Hopefully there won't be any hiccups with this process. One question I do have is of course, does the fact that I'm cross-posting mean that my entries show up twice on your reading list [info - personal] etfb?

Time to go play with dw. That, or practice my presentation for the Student Conference on Thursday. I know what I'd rather be doing.

A reminder to all those wonderful people planning on attending Canberra IV, early bird registration closes on the 18th October. If you want to take advantage of the early bird discount, payments must be completed by this date. Plus giving us money now allows us to pay deposits and purchase scores :)

Weekends are never long enough and I never seem to achieve as much as I would like to in the limited "free" time I have.

Despite moving across town, there are bad neighbours no matter where you live in Canberra. Case in point, someone in our complex in Bruce is stealing our Sunday paper. It's an improvement on the person in Griffith who would steal both halves of the Saturday paper, but it's still just as cruel and dishonest.

What motivates people to do such nasty things.

Someone stole my bike from [info]uniqueid/[info]naturalredhead's place where I had left it while I moved across town. The bike was locked to the wire mesh next to [info]uniqueid's car in his supposedly "secure car park" using a decent but obviously not good enough bike lock, since they just cut through the cable. It's not the kind of cable you can use bolt cutters on so it's fairly obvious someone put a certain amount of thought into this act.

I just can't comprehend why people do such things.

Anyway, I know in the grand scheme of things this really doesn't rate, particularly when I consider the two fellow PhD students in my lab who are Iranian.

Amusing Ash Wednesday related comment
08:59am 25/02/2009
So my sister and I were standing at the bus stop in Manuka after attending morning mass at the cathedral, and we had ashen crosses on our foreheads from the service. Cue the following comment from random dude at the bus stop.

Random Dude: "Hey ladies, do you mind if I ask you a question? Are those for the fires?"

At the moment I am amused. I was less amused at the time seeing as my sleepy state and lack of food made my brain process it as being a question about the bus (seeing as a 5 was just pulling up) so I had said yes before my brain kicked into gear so I could say "no, it's for Ash Wednesday".

Why does nerd always equal magic user )

What doesn't make sense is listing Sorcerer second - it sort of makes sense that a character would have a level of Sorcerer to begin with and then enter into the "years of study" required to become a wizard, hence the two levels of Wizard. But then again, depending on the setting, there's meant to be a certain amount of distrust between "book learners" and those with "natural ability", so the combination isn't something you would find in all campaign settings. Having already played a wizard I'm in no hurry to make another wizard character although I'm intrigued by what a Warlock with the Arcane Initiate multi-class feat (giving some elements of wizard) would be like in 4th Edition.

There are a few in there that I would watch more if I had the time. Majority of the bolded ones are those I own/can borrow the DVDs. The DVD collection of the ACT libraries is awesome like that.

We now have wireless broadband! - (optus 3G network resold through Exetel).

So my Huawei 169 modem arrived yesterday and after being told not to install it on Cathy's laptop (because she wanted to be there when we first connected it... aww) I attempted to get it to work on my Eee PC (Flea - now with Ubuntu - Intrepid Ibex to be precise) because I was assured it would simply be a case of plugging it in.

Nup, couldn't get it to work last night so I brought my Eee into the uni this morning to try and do it with internet assistance. After half an hour of googling and reading through various forums I discovered that I actually had to log onto the exetel website and active the sim. Guess who didn't read the email they sent correctly. *oops*

Anyway, I did that, and 2 minutes later received the confirmation SMS, then tried plugging the USB modem into Flea and selecting the 3G network from the menu and ta da - all connected.

If I haven't said it before, I really do love linux, Ubuntu in particular. I loved Flea anyway, I wouldn't have survived in Japan without my Eee PC, but Flea is so much more usable running Ubuntu than Xandros (which comes pre-installed). The only thing that is still an issue - the microphone doesn't work, but since I haven't used Skype since I returned to Canberra (kind of difficult without an internet connection at home) I'm happy to wait it out to see if someone comes up with a fix.

Ewwww....

I haven't had the best start to the day. I arrived at uni and went to the fridge to put my food in the fridge and in the process knelt down in a puddle of water seeping from underneath. Naturally my skirt went "weee" *absorb* and so I had to deal with a partially soggy skirt while attempting to solve the issue with the fridge.

This fridge has many issues, mainly the result of neglect. The major one is that people abandon food in there with no labels and then forget about it. I'm guilty of not labelling my food, I'm also guilty of forgetting about stuff in the fridge, but I usually remember before it goes all moldy and blergh. I also massively make up for it by being the one who clears out the fridge and mops up the puddles of water when the fridge floods. The flooding is actually caused by the freezer section - last time the flooding happened when the freezer section was allowed to become a big block of ice. This time it was the "melting tray" that was frozen solid - a 40cmx40cm sheet. No wonder the excess water just flowed down the back of the fridge where it congregated in a big puddle underneath.

It's all cleaned up now, and I took this opportunity to toss out obviously moldy and expired food in the fridge, but it really isn't the kind of thing you want to do first thing, particularly when you haven't eaten any breakfast yet.

I'm hungry, but I really couldn't face food at this point...

So with assistance from my nearest friendly linux geek (thank you Mr [info]uniqueid) I can now has ubuntu on my EeePC... much more friendly and customisable than the Xandros OS that came pre-installed. Having followed the advice on the ubuntu documentation wiki ( here, the biggest hurdle was the wireless and it's now working fine, so the only major issue now is the fact that the microphone doesn't work. No doubt I'll find other issues along the way but I must say I am very impressed with the ease with which Ubuntu was able to be installed. I think I've been scarred too deeply by the frustration of Windows while growing up and now I have MacOS at the uni to battle with these days. Having to wrangle with three operating systems on an almost daily basis is an interest challenge.

It's the winter solstice in the Northern hemisphere, summer solstice in the Southern hemisphere, and Haiku Day in the U.S. Does that inspire you to write a three-line poem with five syllables in the first and last lines and seven in the middle line?

Hmm... quarantine question
10:51pm 07/12/2008
So Takahashi-san joined in the expedition to Atami today (more detail about that tomorrow) and gave me a small farewell gift of some small bags containing incense - for putting in a drawer etc. The issue is - it's incense. I carefully opened one of them up and inside a bag inside the bag (so not sitting loose) - the incense is a powder, probably like powdered pot purri. I think it's correct to assume that I won't be able to bring them back to Australia because of plant quarantine concerns.

So do I carefully open the other two up and remove the incense bags? That way I at least get to keep the "shell" of the gift and the outer "bags" will smell nice for a while. If I don't do anything and wait until I arrive in Australia and declare it to customs, then I risk losing all the gift which would suck.

So, the days are flying past (hooray!) and in two and a half weeks I will be returning to Australia (hooray!).

Now I have a nice bunch of blank postcards here and a desire to ramble. Would anyone like a postcard?

Comment below with your address (comments are screened) and I'll send you one from Japan.

Grrr. The curse of the overcast sky strikes again, even though I'm in a completely different country.

I wanted to see what the moon/venus/jupiter thing looked like from Japan (as in, would it be visible) only the sky has decided to be overcast and ruined my plans.

Woe.

You know the website I made at the height of my Wil Anderson fandom, back before I moved on to concentrate on university? I've only just realized it's still linked on on Wil's official website. Oh dear. My teenybopper-esk fannishness preserved in crappy html (because I insisted on coding it myself without the help of programs like dreamweaver).

There once was a time when I would be bouncing off the walls with the excitement of being acknowledged. Now I just cringe. I mean I didn't even make it to Wil's show this year (the preview/development show for BeWILdered was in Canberra in late February but I was in Victoria at the time for a conference/catching up with Melbourne friends).

I really must remember to go to his show this year. *makes a note to keep an eye on the Canberra Theatre website*
